March 13, 2005 - To Eris Human
You know, we all make mistakes. There's no perfect person. Trying to be a perfect person is like trying to convince a mule to talk: you might get a promising sound or two, but in the long run, it's a futile endeavor.
Clergy isn't exempt from this.
Priests of all kinds make mistakes. They have moments of weakness. They have dreams that crash down about them. They open doors they cannot close.
We all know this, but we also forget it. We look at these people as if they really are better than us, as if the Gods keel them saver, prevent wrong decisions, or somehow open doors no mere mortal can open. We see in our clergy what we wish we saw in ourselves.
When I wake up in the morning after I've finished writing this, I'll probably be back under the myth again. It doesn't matter that I know these people are fallible and make mistakes; I will think about the Clergy I know: Todd, Jenni, Mazi, Skip, Kirk, and many others, and I will forget that they are human.
The title "Clergy" is, partially, a mask. Once someone knows you wear that mask, they expect more from you. Who you are in every day life is transformed, even by those conscious of the transformation.
If I reach for that mask, I can never put it away.
Am I ready for such a thing? Can I be judged by my mask at all times? Can I take that?
