January 01, 2005 - Yule thoughts
On Yule this year, I could not celebrate with the Grove. Instead, I wrote my
own Yule rite. It was a new challenge, and a fun one.
But I was surprised at how easy it was.
It was as if the cosmos flowed out and down and onto the page. I found myself
creating a strange new reality that was yet vaguely familiar. In it, the sun set
in a cave every night, traveled through many tunnels underground (lighting the
world of the dead as it did so), and finally coming up in the east. Each day it
traveled longer and further, taking up more time in the Underworld.
My rite reminded the sun that it should take shorter routes to the upperworld
because of old bargains.
It was fun and fascinating to write. I look forward to doing another solitary
rite.
