Nature Awareness, Requirement 6
Briefly describe the major sources of air and water pollution in your area, what the biggest source of pollution in your area is, and what impact it has. (minimum 100 words)
A couple of major sources of air and water pollution include the old mining companies in the Ohio hills (most of which are abandoned but still pollute). A number of towns and rivers locally are affected primarily by the runoff that is generated by erosion of the mining entrances and the subsidence areas. The "gob piles" basically sheer acid off into the groundwater and contaminate it. Similarly, we also have serious issues with over-paving locally. The amount of pavement prevents the water from soaking into the ground, and carries the water over dirty ground without filtration, straight to the rivers.
The air is polluted partially by Ohio's coal power plants, but also by the poor design of Columbus' mass-transit system. The busses do not run to enough places and are not utilized well enough by the people heading to those places that they do run, which leads to further pollution of the air around the city.
