Nature Awareness, Requirement 10
Identify one plant or animal species which was introduced to your area and explain how its introduction and continued presence has affected the local ecology and what, if any, steps are being taken to mitigate those effects. (minimum 100 words)
The Emerald Ash Borer was found in Ohio first in 2003, making headlines with the destruction of hundreds of newly-planted ash trees in central Ohio. Universities are scrambling to find a solution that is better than
quarantines and fines (currently in place) on lumber exports on a county by county basis (locally, it is illegal to move ash wood out of my county into either Licking or Delaware county). Insecticides are being used, as are various preventative treatments. The larvae of this insect are what cause the most damage, feeding on the inner bark of the trees, preventing the trees from transporting nutrients. More than 20 million trees have been killed in three states by this insect.
