Indo-European Mythology 1, Requirement 8d
Discuss how the following seven elements of ADF's cosmology are (or are not) reflected in the myths of two different Indo-European cultures. For this question, please use the same two cultures as a basis of comparison for the entire question. (minimum 100 words each)
Nether/Underworld
The Celtic underworld seems to generally be "beyond the waves" or to
the west. It is usually associated with water or wells, also. (Ellis, 134) The Vedic earth is the "underworld," as it is at the bottom. It is not a flat disk that floats on the waters. (MacDonnell, 9) It is, though, called "boundless" and "extended" and "broad". It is divided into four quarters, and at the center stands a speaker, the fifth division.
It is not the abode of the ancestors at all (that is the Upperworld or
heavens). ADF primarily works through the implication that the well leads
"down" to the underworld, and the gate primarily chosen is the Well.
This fits nicely with Celtic myth, but much less so than with Vedic myth.
