Indo-European Mythology 1, Requirement 7e
Explain how each of the following elements of ADF ritual does or does not resonate with elements of two different Indo-European cultures. You need not use the same two cultures as a basis of comparison for each element. For example, you may compare and contrast the concept of the Earth Mother in Greek and Vedic cultures, and Deities of the Land in light of Irish-Celtic and Breton-Celtic cultures. (minimum 100 words each)
Outdwellers
The Vedas mention things called the dasa or dasyu, atmospheric
demons that traditionally stand against Indra and the rest of the deities.
Indra is often referred to as the "Dasyu-slayer, and his aid in invoked
against evil. The Dasyus attempted to ascend to heaven, and Indra burnt them
down. In scattering the Daysus, he scatters the mists and darkness, and they
steal the waters and light from the gods. (MacDonnell, 157) In Norse myth,
Thor is known to slay and fight the giants, which are forces of chaos and
disorder, and also has no trouble dispatching them. He often is called upon to
protect humanity and community. (Davidson, 89) ADF's treatment of the
outdwellers changes from local Grove to local Grove, but in general, we deal
with them as forces of chaos and disorder, and often as things to be defeated
(or at least protected from).
