Indo-European Mythology 1, Requirement 7d

Explain how each of the following elements of ADF ritual does or does not resonate with elements of two different Indo-European cultures. You need not use the same two cultures as a basis of comparison for each element. For example, you may compare and contrast the concept of the Earth Mother in Greek and Vedic cultures, and Deities of the Land in light of Irish-Celtic and Breton-Celtic cultures. (minimum 100 words each)

Deities of the Sky

The Vedas discuss the deity Indra, who is primarily a thunder-god, who leads the gods in fights against the demons, particularly against drought and darkness. He is also associated with the waters and the light of the world, and is a god of battle. He carries a thunderbolt or other projectile weapon (sometimes a bow and arrow) and uses it against the demons. (MacDonnell, 54-55) Taranis is the counterpart in Celtic mythology, who carries lightning bolts and a wheel (which may or may not be a solar wheel). For Taranis, we generally reconstruct him into a role similar to Jupiter and Thor, and he seems to be a tutelary deity (as Indra does). ADF's conception of the deities of the sky generally places them in relation to light and sun, and their power over storms.
