Indo-European Mythology 1, Requirement 7b
Explain how each of the following elements of ADF ritual does or does not resonate with elements of two different Indo-European cultures. You need not use the same two cultures as a basis of comparison for each element. For example, you may compare and contrast the concept of the Earth Mother in Greek and Vedic cultures, and Deities of the Land in light of Irish-Celtic and Breton-Celtic cultures. (minimum 100 words each)
Deities of the Land
Agni is the chief terrestrial god of the Vedics, particularly as he is the
sacrificial fire which sits not only at the center of the world but at the
center of ritual. (MacDonnell, 88) His centrality to myth and ritual can be
seen by the fact that over 200 hymns are written to him in the RgVeda. He
seems to have been born in the aerials waters or the highest heavens, and to
have descended to the terrestrial plane, and he retains the epitaph
"Navel of the Earth." (MacDonnell, 92) In Norse mythology, we have
the Vanir, traditionally seen as deities of the land (thought they are so much
more), and we also find them connected with the ancestors and remembering
them. (Davidson, 126) ADF's ritual outline generally connects the deities of
the land with the ancestors.
