Crushed

Why did they pick me to protect you?
The hall was full of knights ready
All with more experience than me
Every one less afraid of danger and death.
So why was it me that M'lady picked
To guard your soul and protect your body
Against evil and pain, God and Goddess?
I am called on a quest to protect you
Against a pantheon of good and evil
That seeks to destroy me, but can't.
Is this why? Because to destroy me
They must destroy those near me?
If this is the way of the Gods
I wish no part of their evils.
But I will protect you, because if not
I will be crushed by the Gods themselves.
